Tamper-evident PVC labels (mark-resistant): what they actually do
If you came looking for mark resist pvc labels, the short answer is: there is no single thing called "tamper-evident PVC label". There are three different mechanisms and they behave very differently when peeled. The right one depends on which fraud scenario you are defending against. This page, by the engineering team at Heyuan Dexinli Packaging, explains the three mechanisms and how to specify each to a Chinese factory.
What makes a label "tamper-evident"?
A tamper-evident label is one that visibly destroys itself or leaves a residue pattern when someone tries to peel it off. Three mechanisms are in production use today, and procurement specifications name them by mechanism rather than by product:
- Void-pattern adhesive. The label leaves the word VOID (or a custom legend / barcode) in the substrate when lifted. Production reads the void pattern and decides the unit has been opened.
- Destructible face stock. The vinyl tears into small fragments if peeled, so it cannot be removed in one piece and re-applied elsewhere.
- Residue adhesive. A low-tack adhesive that transfers fully to the surface — the label cannot be lifted cleanly without leaving a smear.
All three are sold as "tamper-evident". They are not interchangeable, and the wrong choice for a given application is a common procurement error.
How long does tamper-evident vinyl last outdoors?
Across the label industry, a 50-80 micron PVC face stock with UV-stable acrylic adhesive is usually planned around 3-5 years of outdoor exposure before the acrylic yellows noticeably and peel adhesion drops. Treat that as a planning figure rather than a warranty, and specify the service life you need against it. If you need longer than five years, step up to a polyester face stock instead, or add a UV-stable overlaminate. We will not quote you a UV life figure without seeing your exposure conditions and any test requirement you have to satisfy.
Will a tamper-evident label leave residue when removed?
By design, yes — that is the point. A void-pattern label leaves a visible legend in the original adhesive footprint; a destructible face stock leaves fragment ghosts and adhesive smears that cannot be fully wiped off. The only tamper-evident-adjacent construction that does not leave residue is a low-tack removable adhesive, and that does not qualify as tamper-evident by most procurement specifications. If your end use requires clean removal plus a way to detect tampering, you need a security cut or a perforation in the face stock instead of an adhesive gimmick.
What is the realistic MOQ for a custom tamper-evident PVC?
For a custom tamper-evident label, MOQ is driven by print method, die complexity, and whether a registered void pattern has to be plate-matched. We quote it against your job rather than publishing one number.
- Digital carries no plate cost and accepts the shortest custom runs.
- Flexo needs a longer run to amortise the plate, but the per-label cost drops sharply past that point.
For a security application or electronics subassembly tag where the void pattern is registered with the buyer, we recommend a short pilot run first to confirm conformance with the buyer's reading equipment, then place the production run once the pattern is signed off. Frequently asked questions
- What makes a label "tamper-evident"?
- Three mechanisms: void-pattern adhesive, destructible face stock, or residue adhesive. They are not interchangeable.
- How long does tamper-evident vinyl last outdoors?
- Industry-typical planning figure is 3-5 years for a 50-80 micron PVC with UV-stable acrylic. Treat it as a planning number rather than a warranty; longer service needs a polyester face stock.
- Will a tamper-evident label leave residue when removed?
- Yes, by design. If you need clean removal, ask for a security cut or perforation instead.
- What's the realistic MOQ?
- Quoted per job. A pilot run is the sensible first step for security applications, to confirm reader conformance before the production run.
